DOROT:
DOROT is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to alleviate social isolation and provide concrete services to older adults. For more than four decades, DOROT has been an innovative leader in the fields of aging services and volunteerism. DOROT’s diverse set of programs, as well as our focus on providing intergenerational connections to seniors, has ensured that DOROT’s clients have access to the resources they need to age with dignity, independence, and grace.
More info:
Youth volunteers are a crucial part of our programs. They help to bridge the generation gap and alleviate social isolation for our seniors. You can help improve the lives of seniors through friendly visits, birthday deliveries, computer tutoring, and much more. We take great care in matching volunteers with appropriate projects and with older friends to visit. All of our youth volunteer programs take place in Manhattan.
There are several ongoing volunteer opportunities:
Intergenerational Chess, Creating Card Projects for Seniors, and more upon contacting the office.
There are also one-time volunteer opportunities:
Holiday Package Deliveries: Take part in DOROT’s annual Package Deliveries, which happen on several Sundays throughout the year. You will visit a senior in their home to provide companionship and to deliver a package filled with food items. DOROT can accommodate teen volunteers arriving in groups or in pairs. Orientation is provided. Allow approximately three hours for orientation, package pickup, and the visit/delivery.
Food Drives: Students can also run a food drive to collect and donate the items for the food packages. For more information, contact youth@dorotusa.org.
